Egyptian Goalie says no to Man of the match award
For most footballers, winning the man of the match award against a team like Uruguay is a dream comes true. But this was not the case for Egyptian goalie Mohamed El- Shanawy who refused to take the award after an impressive work in goal.
Egypt played two-time Fifa World Cup champions Uruguay in their opening match on June 15, staging a show that few expected. They made their comeback to the world cup after a lengthy absence and with their talisman on the bench, they showcased world class football. They battled the mighty Uruguay armed with Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani as Salah watched from the bench, unable to make a contribution.
The deadlock would be broken at the 89th minute after Uruguayan Gimenez buried a header past Elshenawy i the dying minutes of the game helping his side to win 1-0. However Elshenawy played his heart out stopping Suarez several times and saving a thunderbolt from Edinson Cavani earning himself the Man-of-the-Match award afterwards.
His refusal of the award may come to many as a surprise but to his fellow Muslims it’s a heroic gesture. The award from beer brand Budweiser resembles an artistic red goblet is against his Islamic values which prohibit alcohol consumption and that was the sole reason why he declined the award.
An Egyptian official has confirmed this and attributed the action to his religious stands. However, the official has clarified that players are not restricted from taking the award.
Egypt will be playing host nation Russia in their second Group A match in the last match of the day today (Tuesday, 9:00 pm EAT). Russia will be coming from a 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia and will be looking for that one win that will take them past the group stages.
With Salah confirmed to be 100% fit by both team doctors and his agent, Russia will be playing against a rejuvenated Egyptian side. This game is a must-win for Egypt and with Salah in the pitch, they can’t be ruled out of Group A just yet.
This will be another opportunity for goalie Mohammed Elshenawy to be outstanding in goal while it’s the only opportunity for Salah to live up to his hyped name in this tournament.
