Shaolin Soccer, the team with a name causing ripple in Embu football, collected their first win as the ECL entered its fifth round Sunday. The newcomers collected their first maximum points at Green Everton, Kiriari, to salvage a nearly waning reputation as the league takes shape.

Comeback

A 2-1 comeback win was what it took for the Kigumo-based Shaolins to make a statement. Lawrence Muriuki and James Ndegwa were the goal heroes of the day, with the latter putting in a man-of-the match performance despite coming on late. The gong was shared with goalkeeper Fredick ‘Oredo’ Oduor who did good work to keep out the home side.

Shaolin dominated the entire match, but the home side felt aggrieved by the decision that led to the equalier. Green Everton coach Bonface Kithinji felt that the ball should have been called for a throw-in in the build-up to Shaolin’s first goal.

Elsewhere, FC Inter Dunga made 3K sweat at their home ground as the sides played to a 1-1 draw. The visitors silenced the packed Kagumori stadium with a first-half goal which they took into the break. However, they let in an early equalizer after the restart and were unable to grab a winner despite spirited efforts for the rest of the half.

Wounded, angry Man U

Meanwhile, Man U were making amends for last week’s stumble as they welcomed Runyenjes at Kairuri. The home side put five without reply pat Runyenjes. The result took them to within a point of 3K, ensuring there remains pressure at the top.

Yatte, playing away, showed grit to silence Kangami with a 3-0 win. The Kamiu School side were coming from a not-so-positive week after their win over Inter Dunga in the fourth round was nullified. The disputes committee cancelled their 2-0 win and ordered a replay for failure to meet match standards. They, however showed composure as they collected some important points on the road.

Juventus stopped

Kaa Ngumu continued their grind with a 3-2 win over Juventus at Moi Stadium. The Sacco team came in as underdogs despite playing at home. They were facing a team that had made 3K sweat for a 1-0 win at Kagumori. Furthermore, Juventus dealt Man U their first loss and were already sending shock waves in the league. At the end of 90 minutes, however, it is the home side that came out stronger.

The other match scheduled for the day, Kisimani vs Gaturi, was not played. The cancellation was occasioned by Kisimani’s participation in the Majani Insurance Tournament. This means that Gaturi will have to wait longer for a chance to walk away from last week’s 7-0 drubbing at the hands of 3K.

Officiating concerns

Many times, questions about officiating are deemed as jilt of loss. What happens, however, when both opponent teams raise the same concern. The same happened yesterday at Kagumori where both 3k and Dunga felt dissatisfied with the two assistant referees. Shouldn’t that be addressed as a genuine concern?

What next?

The League enters its sixth round this weekend. Five matches are scheduled for the weekend. Inter Dunga host Green Everton at Moi Stadium. Juventus will be playing Yatte at Kithumbu. Runyenjes will make another attempt to win when they play 3K at home. Shaolin welcome Manchester to Kigumo and Kangami will be at home again, this time against Kaa Ngumu.
