Gor Mahia edged Malakia FC of South Sudan 2-1 to book a semi final place in the 2015 edition of the Cecafa Kagame cup.
Gor switched to high gear from the onset, Godfrey Walusimbi latching onto a Michael Olunga cross to open the scoring in the second minute. The exchanges were quite balanced in the following minutes, but it was K’Ogallo who had their efforts paying off, Walusimbi on hand again to extend the lead on 28′.
Gor held the lead going into the break, two minutes added on to top the first half.
Second half began on the same note, but this time the dividends went to the team with less investment. Matthew Jacobs rose highest to head in a long throw in the 64th, but that was as much as we would see changes on the scoresheet.
Gor kept pressing, and were able to thwart with ease any counter attempts sent their way.
Star boy Michael Olunga was denied by the woodwork in the 68th, and came close again in the 79th when Sibomana was felled outside the box.
There were tense moments in the final minutes, but Gor held on well into the two added minutes to book themselves a semifinal spot, keeping on course their dream of winning the cup for a sixth time.
The KPL runaway leaders have now set a semifinal date on Friday with Sudan’s Al Khartoum, who eased 4-0 past Rwanda’s APR in another quarter. The two sides had settled for a 1-1 in their group A match.
